How to Find Your Place in the Business World
To survive as a small business, you must know exactly what you offer, and to whom you are offering it. You cannot market yourself to everybody, and you certainly cannot provide every product or service possible. Your goal is to find your niche – your special place in the business world. Once you find it, you then target your customers, the ones who need the services your niche provides, and hit them with it.

There are 3 questions you should ask yourself when you are trying to find your niche:

What Can You Do?
You business has something about it that makes it special. If you started this business, chances are you started it because you had a talent that you felt you could market. Now is not the time to abandon that talent. Now is the time to accentuate it.

Go back to what made you start your business. Whatever talent or service you provide that made you start it, that is your niche.

How Can You Use Your Niche?
Just because you have a special talent does not necessarily mean that you will be able to make money by using it. There has to be a need for your talent. You have to find consumers who need the products or services that you provide.
One good way to find out if your niche is marketable is to contact potential customers. You can do this through a postcard marketing campaign. Design a postcard printing that serves as both an advertisement and a survey. Tell these potential customers, through your attractive, full color postcards, what your talent is. And ask them if it is something they would be willing to spend money to buy or use. You may be surprised at the response you get.

Can You Sustain Your Niche?
Whatever the results of your postcard marketing campaign, take them seriously. Do not try to sugarcoat them – or justify poor results – because of your desire to succeed. If the results are telling you that you cannot make money with your niche, then you are going to have to change niches in a hurry. You cannot create a market when one does not exist.

If the results are positive, run with it! You have now found your place in the business world, and you have determined that you can make money by using your talents. That is a rare situation, and you should not take it for granted. Do your homework, and put in the blood, sweat, and tears that it takes to build a successful business. In the end, it will all be well worth it.

Remember: it is all about finding your niche. Do not make the mistake of trying to do too much. Find your place, and stick with it.
