Put Yourself Ahead
You are in business and want to know your share of the pie. Once you learn your companies place you can try several things to help get you more of that pie. You want to be comfortable wherever you are first. Then once you have a goal you can make a strategy based on where you want to be. Where you end up may surprise you and help you realize how you can have a position of power.
Put Yourself in Their Head
You want to be an innovator even though some may believe you are an imitator. The information you give people is what is going to make a statement in the head of your consumers/ customers. You want to put your name out there and in any way possible. From color printing on your brochures and advertising, to interactive user friendly web-sites put the info out there to get them interested and lure them in. Try going with a unique idea that will stick.
Use the Competition
You know who number one is right? How about number 2? If you understand the positions you can manipulate them to increase your market share. Sometimes the best bet you have will be to relate your company and product to the leaders and attach your name to theirs somehow. For years companies have had huge success with this form of marketing and positioning in the market.
The competition does not need to be against you and you should know that you may not de-throne number one overnight. It takes time and if you work diligently you can make your piece of the market larger. Remember color printing ads about some very strong companies that had been every where but in first with market share numbers and by attaching them selves to the competition as to why they stand apart.
Sometimes a Leader Needs to Change
So you are number one and others are sneaking your part of the market. This is where you may need to re-engineer your product or strategy. Maybe you are the originator of the product or service. Then it is time to remind people about your reliability and longevity and how others are the imitators of the original. You have hopefully established brand name recognition and this is vital in your position as a company.
Being a leader can mean more change sometimes as well as working to set yourself apart from the rest. You want to be proportioned well in front of the competition and stay there. You know when you need to adapt your product or service by staying ahead of the curve on future product launches. When you need to stay ahead you want to be on the look out constantly for upcoming competition and how they are moving into position.
