| Quick & Easy Fix for Weight loss |
Is there a quick easy fix for weight loss? Ah, let me think....no! I think that most of us know that its not easy, however, we continue to try the new “quick fix” because we have hope that it will someday be easier. Its just not going to happen. I have taken classes throughout my lifetime on health, diet, nutrition etc. and it always circles around back to the “basics”. What are the basics? Well, its that simple formula of calories in vs. calories out. Are you taking in more than you are burning. This is an easy question to answer if you have a weight problem. The answer is yes. Then I hear people tell me that they could not possibly be taking in many calories because they only eat one time a day. That is not always true. How do I know....if these people would actually sit down and write out every single food that they consume at this one sitting and how much they are consuming as far as calories go....I think they would be in for a shock. I can say this because I used to be someone who would eat one meal a day. That was back in high school and when I did eat I would eat large quantities and usually foods that were easy to prepare which means they are usually foods of little or no nutritional value. There is such a huge connection between mind & body. I used to think back in my one meal a day times that I wasn’t hungry and that I hated to eat breakfast. I failed to think about how my body was able to cope with what I was doing to it.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not an expert nor am I a nutritionist, however, weight loss and gain is something I am familiar with and if I can help someone with this short article to get re-motivated and pro-active about their own health than my goal is accomplished.
I joined a weigh loss group a year ago at my local gym. It was with a personal trainer who is very thin & fit. She is exactly how I want to look and so I joined to find out what she does to look that way. It was a small group of four women and we were to meet on the same day for 8 weeks. The first class we found out our weight, body fat composition, and fitness level and then she walked us through how to use the health clubs equipment and what we should be doing when we use the cardiovascular equipment. I have been weight training since the age of 14 and I know how to use the equipment, however, the trainer pointed out to me ways to challenge myself that I found helpful. It was also nice to have support from other people. The main habit that I think was critical in transforming myself was to write out my foods in a journal. It takes a little getting used to at first. You do not have to be complex with this at all. Only write down the food consumed, the calories and how much protein and whether or not you did any physical activity that day....end of story. I find this to be a lot more easy to implement than other systems. I have been a member of several free online journal type weight loss systems and I find that I lose interest in recording my foods simply because it takes too much time. Some of the foods that I consume are not in their list and then I have to enter them separately and they also want time of day that I ate the foods and you click on something else for the number of servings etc...this method is not as easy for me to stick to so I think having a pocket size journal on hand that you physically write in works best. You can find those at your local book store or online at places like Amazon.com. I actually have a product on review on Amazon about a journal that works great if you want to check that out.
Basically the goal of this article is to start you thinking about your health goals and to write them down for at least one week a month so that you know what your habits are for that week. This will help you to "think" about what you are doing great at and where changes are needed. Another thing is to get active. You do not have to belong to a health club. You could go walking, there are dvd's you can rent from the video store, you could do weight training ( find basic hand weights at target or walmart), and if your not sure what to do with weights you could always find free routines online for you to follow. There are a ton of tools out there! I would even subscribe to a health magazine. They are also full of great ideas on food prep, fitness routines, and success stories for motivation.
