Tax relief on properties happens when the value of the property is reduced so a lower tax is computed. Tangible assets - such as land and buildings, boats and aircraft, developments introduced on a piece of real property - are most often taxed. Property taxes are based on the appraised value of the properties, which are in turn based on their market or sales values.
Property tax relief is, therefore, a reduction or refund of taxes. It is a means of lightening the tax burden on property owners and may be granted by the federal, state and/or local governments; but, more often by states.
California provides relief on taxes imposed on damaged or destroyed properties such as real estate, mobile homes, business equipment, boats or aircraft. These properties are eligible for tax relief under the amended tax laws.
New Jersey implemented the Fair and Immediate Relief (FAIR) plan, which benefited almost two million residents via raised direct property tax relief from $670 to $1.5 billion; increased homestead rebates from $775 to $800; increased maximum rebate from $250 to $800 on senior citizens earning less than $125,000; and, doubled property tax relief from $250 to $500 for individuals earning from $125,000 to $200,000.
Pennsylvania proposed property tax relief on incomes derived through gaming, via the Homeowner Tax Relief Act of 2004. Other states may have property tax relief laws that exist but are little known, contained in such bland or perhaps distinct titles such as Homestead Exemption; Low-income, Long-term Homeowners’ Tax Credit; Senior Citizen Real Property Tax Relief, and First-time Homebuyer Tax Credit.
Whatever it may be, property tax relief reduces the tax burden of the citizen taxpayer, and especially important to senior citizens and low-income households.
