Tax Relief: Categories and Areas

Property tax relief comes in several forms and categories, addresses different problems and reduces taxes with different methods. First time homebuyers, senior citizens, low income taxpayers, long-term property owners, individuals and homesteaders may all benefit from tax relief.

Senior Citizens
Most senior citizens have lower income because they have retired from active gainful work or employment. Furthermore, higher health maintenance and insurance costs, as well as other living expenses, requires them to spend less on other needs.

First Time Homebuyers
On the other hand, first time homebuyers usually are starting families, husband-wife tandem and maybe one or two children, financially-strained and seeking to establish themselves in the community. Of course, those who can very well afford to buy their own homes are granted smaller tax reduction, if any at all.

Low Income Families
Similarly, low income families may also be eligible for property tax relief, particularly if they cannot afford to buy and have just inherited or received the property as a gift. In this case (and some others), relief is mostly granted if it is proven they cannot afford to pay the full tax due.

Individuals
Individual tax returns are often granted rebates, refunds, tax credits or reduction of taxes due to the taxpayer’s low income and other reasons. However, many people do not take the necessary time to redeem tax credits because of the often tedious process needed.

Long-term Property Owners
It may vary from state to state, but many long-term property owners are granted tax relief after they apply for it. Consideration is given on property depreciation, utility or other reasons, so the amounts of relief are not fixed, nor does everyone qualify.
