| Film Cameras Are Just A Memory Now |
Digital cameras have been revolutionary for the field of photography. Fewer and fewer photographers are now using film cameras, opting instead for digital cameras that store images in an electronic format on memory cards.
Digital cameras became commercially available in the 1990’s. Bu tthey were not immediately accepted by professional photographers. In the early days of digital cameras the image resolution was too low to produce professional images. The images were good enough for amateurs taking a few memorable pictures but they were not up to the standard required for commercial use.
Over the past ten years the resolution of digital cameras has greatly improved and there are now many digital cameras that are able to produce large, high quality images. As a result many professional photographers have been making the transition from SLR film cameras to advanced digital SLR equipment.
The real benefits of digital cameras are that you can:
- see a shot immediately after it is taken, and shoot it again if necessary.
- take as many photographs as you want at no extra cost because there is no film involved - the images are stored electronically.
- greatly reduce the time from taking a photo to seeing it in print.
- forget about those old dark room techniques that were time-consuming and could be damaging to the photographer’s health due to potentially toxic chemicals.
Digital cameras have been introduced so successfully that in 2006 Nikon and Canon made similar announcements that they would be cutting back the production of 35mm film camera models.
And there are still more benefits for those using digital photography, such as the ability to manipulate the image after it is taken. Photographers can use photo-editing software to quickly make minor adjustments to images. Blemishes or spots can be touched up. Brightness, contrast and colors can be adjusted quite easily.
Photo-editing software can also enable more dramatic alterations, such as the removing the background, changing the background, or even combining two or more images for artistic effects.
Digital cameras have been revolutionary for the entire field of photography and in particular for freelance photographers. Combined with the power of the Internet, freelance photographers can now easily work from anywhere, uploading photos and working more efficiently than ever before.
