Effects that the High Incidence of Divorce has on Society

Traditional people used to get into a marriage thinking that they will stay with the person for better or for the worse, these days married people pack their bags at the first sign of trouble. The attitude of the people towards marriage as an institution is rapidly changing the society as a whole. While we all look forward to a better and healthier society as we grow old, the evolving society of today seems to have a lot of negative undertones because of the ever-increasing divorce rate.

Effects of Abnormally High Rate of Divorce on the Society as a Whole

Our society shapes the way we think, act, and live our lives. In addition, even our safety depends on how safe the society around us is. Therefore, it is important for our society to remain safe and healthy. However, certain constituents of the society are impacting the society in such a negative way that the society, as we know it today, may cease to exist.

When we think of divorce, we usually think of a bitter couple, sad children, and unhappy grandparents. While it may seem to us that this picture will start looking better after time heals the wounds, nothing could be far from truth. Research indicates that divorce can scar the minds of everyone involved for a lifetime. In fact, divorce is rated as the second most tragic event in a person’s life after death. Some may think that high divorce rate too is the outcome of the changing societal values. However, it is important to remember that people make the society what it is and not the other way around.

High Divorce Rates will Lead to More Chaos and Instability

High divorce rates contribute towards rising crime rates, teenage pregnancy, more broken homes and less happy people. We will discuss this in detail in the following section.

More Single-Parent Households Give Rise to Poverty, Crime, and Teenage Pregnancy

The high divorce rates have given rise to more single-parent households. When a family lives on two incomes, it is always better off economically. Children can have better education and the family as a whole, can have a better standard of living. However, when a couple divorces, it not only impacts the happiness of the family but also the family’s economic status.

Education of the children may be compromised because of financial troubles and when children are not occupied in a productive manner, they are bound to indulge in unproductive activities such as crimes or petty theft.

Children need a loving and caring environment to grow mentally and physically. Children being raised in single-parent households never get to spend time with either of their parents because the custodial parent is usually busy trying to keep up with the finances and household work whereas the non-custodial parent only gets to meet the children as per the visitation rules.

In the absence of basic love and affection, children tend to explore other ways to find love or express anger at the situation. While girls are at risk of becoming teenage mothers, boys are at risk of becoming delinquents.

Young children have extremely impressionable minds and it is highly likely for young children going through a divorce to encounter severe psychological problems. Until now the experts believed that these psychological problems healed soon after the divorce. However, recent studies have proved that the effect of these psychological problems is more long-term in nature and likely to impact how these children form future relationships.

Divorce Giving Rise to More Broken Homes

Recent studies have proved that children of divorce are more at a risk of getting divorced. In addition, since their view of relationships becomes so distorted, they start fearing commitments and may not get married altogether.

Children of divorce are likely to form unsuccessful relationships because of their deep-rooted fears and misconceptions. Since the children of divorce never get to experience a loving and stable home, they are not able to provide the same to their children either. This results in more broken homes.

How Does a High Divorce Rate Change the Attitudes of People Towards Marriage?

A high divorce rate has made the youth of today very sceptical of marriage as an institution. They fail to understand the need for marriage and do not understand the importance of it. In fact, most of the people feel that it is better not to get married because marriage brings with it a lot of bitterness and sadness. For this reason, more and more people are opting for live-in relationships instead of marriage.
