Is a High Divorce Rate Leading to Global Warming?
Sitting in our cozy living rooms, we complacently watch the documentaries broadcasted by the National Geographic Channel, issuing an occasional hum and grunt as a mark of our sympathy for the impending ecological disaster called Global Warming. We fail to realize that Doomsday has already arrived. The ecological clock is ticking fast and what is at stake is the survival of our children. Yes, earth will continue to exist albeit without us.

What is Global Warming

Global warming is in fact a complex environmental phenomenon that is the outcome of intense human urge for material progress. Simply speaking, the temperature of our atmosphere is increasing at a fast pace. This has happened because of an unprecedented rise in the level of Greenhouse Gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. A considerable proportion of such gases are produced by human activities such as industrial emissions, construction activities, agriculture and deforestation. These gases entrap the heat in our atmosphere resulting in a rise in temperature. Considering the fact that a miniscule increase in the temperature of the earth could jeopardize the survival of our eco system, one could well imagine the havoc unleashed by a significant rise in atmospheric temperature.

Consequences of Global Warming

The existing research and documentation reveals that Global Warming will not only have a debilitating impact in the future, but the world is already facing many problems owing to it. Spread of diseases like malaria, malnutrition and skin cancer is causing deaths at a large scale. Weather related natural disasters like floods and heat waves are on the rise. Bleaching of coral reefs is causing inundation of costal areas. Melting of glaciers is leading to scarcity of fresh water. Untold numbers of plant and animal species have become extinct. Large scale deforestation is altering the climatic patterns. Food is becoming scarce owing to rise in prices and a fall in the average yield. Though this list may go on and on, realistically speaking, it will take a room full of paper to catalogue the drastic fallout of a rise in the atmospheric temperature.

Global Warming and Consumption Patterns

The fact that needs to be understood is that anything we consume, be it a matchbox, a book or a car requires energy for its production. So far, a large chunk of this energy is being produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Large scale use of fossil fuels is producing massive amount of Greenhouse Gases like carbon dioxide. Hence a drastic fall in the consumption levels throughout the world are required to abate or reverse the consequences of global warming. Societies with high levels of consumption are major contributors to the already massive stock of Greenhouse Gases. You will be surprised to know that an average British citizen produces twice the amount of carbon dioxide as compared to a person living in India. This is despite the fact that environmental laws are more stringent in Europe as compared to Asia.

Divorce and Global Warming

Production of Greenhouse Gases has less to do with population then the number of households required to accommodate a given population. Following this premise, it becomes easier to understand that high divorce rates are certainly adding to the production of carbon dioxide. Divorce splits families and creates new households. Going by the most conservative estimates, if we assume that one in three marriages in the UK ends in a divorce, then high divorce rates certainly add nearly 33 new households per 100 existing households per annum. Creation of these households results in an increased consumption of resources like fuel, water, electricity, wood, land, etc. Thus it will be true to say that divorce is no doubt a major factor influencing Global Warming.

The Village Approach

The best thing to do would be to resort to the wisdom of the past ages when people lived together and shared everything under the same roof. This ensured an optimum utilization of resources. The final outcome of this village approach towards life will be a significant reduction of carbon dioxide and other Greenhouse gases. Joint families are healthier for the environment than nuclear families or split families. In short, intact families are better for the future of our planet.
