BioAvailability Of Iron In Vitamins

http://www.MyHealthySupplement.com is an information site which will guide you on the importance and safety of nutrition. Special reports on what to take and from which companies are highlighted.

As we are aware each one of us has a different blood type as well as our blood iron levels varies from person to person. Taking all this into consideration, is it safe to take a gerenral mutivitamin with iron across the counter or do we have consult a doctor, is the question?

Iron deficiency Anemia
What is iron-deficiency anemia?

Iron deficiency anemia occurs in our bodies when the blood iron levels are low.

Who gets Iron-deficiency-anemia?
More than a third of the world population suffers from this condition though it is not so common in the developed countries due to increase nutritional standards present. The commonest cause of loss of blood due to hook worm infestation leading to blood loss from the gastrointestinal tract is one of the leading causes of iron deficiency anemia.

Iron deficiency in our bodies is the major cause for anemia to occur in patients.

How does blood iron help our bodies and why is it important?
We need iron to be present so that haemoglobin can be produced in our bodies. The haemoglobin stores iron in the form of ferritin in roughly 30% in the bone marrow, liver and spleen. Iron helps in oxygen transportation in our cells. Heamoglobin is responsible to transport oxygen from the blood cells in the lungs to other organs in our body and iron helps with this transfer. The iron atom helps in binding of the oxygen and is necessary for maintaining proper levels of oxygen. If iron is not present this will lead to less oxygen and our cells will starve for oxygen.

What causes iron-deficiency anemia?
Factors leading to Iron-deficiency anemia :

Poor Diets: low iron in our daily diets.
We derive iron from foods in our diet, however, only 1 mg of iron is absorbed for every 10 to 20 mg of iron ingested. Hence a person unable to have a proper balanced iron-rich meal diet may suffer from some degree of iron-deficiency anemia in their bodies.

Growth Spurts In our Bodies- Increase Demand
We require extra iron when red blood cell production is most rampant especially when our bodies are growing due to adolescence, baby years of growth or during pregnancy and lactation. During these growth spurts our bodies need more iron to help our cells to do their respective jobs.

Decrease absorption of iron in our bodies
Huge blood loss due to injury
Diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia
Blood Samples- A important starting point
Get Medical Advice
The first step is to go to your local doctor and ask for a recommendation to get a blood sample to check your blood serum levels for serum iron or serum ferritin. Then get a check on the blood count and film- Red cells levels.

With this information your doctor will be able to check the Serum soluble trasferrrin receptor levels.
If there is an increase of transferrin receptors than iron deficiency has set in. This assay test may help you to avoid complex bone marrow test examinations.
How Not To Lower blood Iron levels
Foods rich in iron
The loss of blood iron will take place when there is progressive loss of blood and the individual will not take steps to retify the problem. Our bodies are invisible miracles and our blood iron levels can help us as long as we replenish any losses. If these losses are prolonged then our bodies will shut down and the consequences of blood iron deficiency anemia will set in.

How to rectify the problem?

Start eating a small amount of red meats daily to increase your blood iron levels. Iron rich foods-vegetarian diets can be added to add variety to your meal. Introducing orange juice or citrus fruits can help increase low blood iron as Vit C helps with iron blood absorptions.

Go on a 6 month iron replacement program under the supervision of your doctor.

How can Iron deficiency Anemia be Treated?
Its not about diagnosing the problem but getting to what's causing it. In this case taking a proper diet and also supplementation of iron rich vitamins for a short period to bring your iron blood levels to normal and then stopping the treatment as extra iron could lead to toxicity.
Taking Iron With Vitamins
Supplementation with the right vitamin formulations
As we are all different in our cellular body make-up. You will find that the iron levels will vary from person to perosn and also in the life cycle of the individual. What I mean by this is that iron deficiency is more prominent among women and will be seeing more so in the mentrual cycle. Women menstruating will have less iron than women not in their monthly cycle.

Men do not necessary have iron blood levels that may need to be increased and have to make sure they do not increase their blood iron as this could lead to toxicity of iron in their bodies and cause adverse side effects. Men have to be careful that they select a multimineral that has no iron in it.

Do Not Take Supplements With Iron
In fact supplementation with iron in the vitamin should not be present unless you have had a blood iron test done and the doctor has recommended you to go on a course of supplemenation for a few months to increase your iron levels in your blood.

Check Your Blood Iron Levels
It is important that you check your iron levels after this period and see if you should lower your iron supplementation or even stop it altogther.

Consult Your Doctor
Iron supplementaion should take place under the direction of your doctor. Taking iron rich vitamins is only if you have iron deficiency anemia. This is more evident among women and one needs to go for a blood test and then take the supplement as prescribed by your local doctor. Women, vitamins with iron should not be taken unless you need them. You may have to be on the iron supplements for a few months to get your low iron levels up and only stop taking them after a doctor has checked your latest blood iron levels again. Thewn you will need to go back on a normal high potency vitamins with no iron in them.

Side Effects

If you are experiencing any side effects please consult your doctor and reduce the levels if need be. Supplementation of iron can cause constipation and discoloration of bowel movements. Iron pills need to be taken with orange juice on an empty stomach to avoid constipation.

Constipation may occur when you start your iron supplements. You may be able to reduce this by taking your iron pills with lots of water and on an empty stomach or with citrus friuts. Orange juice maybe a very good suggestion. The Viamin C in citrus fruits helps the iron pils to be easily absorbed and reduces constipation

Importance of Blood Iron
As we do not see it or it is not heavily stressed that we use iron in our diets , it is hugely forgotten so much so we forget how important it is to be present for our bodies to function in a proper balanced way. If iron is very low in our blood we will be left feeling very tired,, disorientated or even depression may set in.

To prevent this proper supplementaion under the supervision of your doctor is important. Now you may go to the other extreme and take too much iron and that could leave you constipated, severe heart burns or upset tummies.

Excessive amounts of iron can be reduced by taking out blood from the patient and by reducing the intake of iron rich foods.

Haemochromatosis is characterised by the excessive absorption of iron. Normally, excess iron is safely stored in various joints and organs in the body, especially in the the liver. When a person suffers from haemochromatosis, excessive iron stores keep rising in time, the liver will enlarges and gets damaged, leading to serious diseases. One such disease is the cirrhosis of the liver. Other problems that can be caused by excessive amounts of blood iron include heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. Both sexes, male and female are at risk, but women tend to develop the disease later in life, since regular menstrual periods deplete the body of iron. As the symptoms are similiar to a number of diseases haemochromatosis tends to be under-diagnosed.
