Blood Lust

When you shed the blood of local evildoers as a child or young adult, you don’t have to go looking for evildoers to kill when you are more mature and supposedly wiser. Supposedly. When you are older and wiser, you are grateful the evildoers are only plentiful enough to satisfy the blood lust of a new generation of would - be thugs and evidoers.

In early White America, a more humane and civilized society did fine with public humiliation and much tidier executions like pressing. Instead of throwing stones and drawing blood to set an example, they piled stones on a board on top of an evildoer at still public executions. The message for the young witness was just as effective and empowered parents. But there was no satisfactory blood letting for the young thugs. Not to worry. For them there were native evildoers standing in the way of progress. Heathen savages. Hate, kill, hate some more.

Being careful not to kill all the native evildoers there would be people to kill for each new generation of blood lusting thugs we now call warriors and heroes, providing they wear uniforms. “Give me one of those suits and point me to the evildoers.” “Let the fools and hypocrites lead us to honor and glory – mine is not to reason why, mine is but to kill and die.” Isn’t that special?

It did not take long for war profiteers and politicians to see unsatiated blood lust could be exploited for profits and tax revenues by training blood lusting thugs and putting them in uniform to kill and die for the noble cause of corporate profit and political dominion. To make this palatable for the general public, the noble cause was labeled patriotism and freedom, God (I always wondered how they got away with that one) and country. The truth never mattered to the public. Veterans of one war were always ready to send their sons and now daughters off to the next war for God and country. It was never necessary to have more than a small percentage of the people under arms and in uniform to keep the profits rolling in.

We can all be thankful it was discovered it was not necessary to have constant war. Between the generational wars we had enemies who needed to be discouraged by our readiness to go to war. Now the machine could harvest profits and taxes 24/7 without killing anybody. The problem then became the taxpayers. They might not buy the readiness prevention argument generation after generation. If you have the best trained and equipped military force in the world, they must be properly employed in the occupation for which they were trained on a regular basis. It would be bad business to have no one in the military with combat experience.

Without a military draft, young blood lusters had other alternatives and often turned to them. Street gangs, random and opportunistic bloodshed by determined thugs. So government in its infinite wisdom, declared war on crime and began an ambitious prison building program which would generate tax revenues for ever. The war was never on the heart and soul of crime. It was on street crime. When the prisons had empty beds, they had to be filled as those of the hospitals. Space is money. So we got a war on poverty and a war on drugs, to fill empty beds and justify more prison building, a major growth industry to this day.

As more and more young blood lusters have been locked in cages, conditions have been created to supply more of them from our streets. They instill fear in the public and the public is willing to pay more for protection. In effect, all government is now a glorified if subtle protection racket. We need protection only government can provide for ever increasing numbers of enemies, foreign and domestic. Profits are nothing without growth. More criminals are created by the stroke of a pen. More fear, anger and resentment is created in the public. The wars never end and the rich get richer. A perfect world. All from what a few thousand years ago was a minor social problem, easily controlled. It has been a long, long time since social costs and benefits have mattered to more than a few. This is the identical mindset we see in resource conservation and environmental issues. Profit first. Planet and people last.

All this social engineering has depended upon public ignorance, which is now falling away like the scales from the blind man’s eyes. That enlightenment does not happen overnight, guarantees a lot of short term misery and suffering, as the super rich continue to fight for dominion. The good news – the really good news is; their dominion has less than twenty years to run. Hang tough.
