How do you think the average 18 year old college freshman would feel taking a seat in his first class and looking around and seeing women his mom's age, or even better, his mom?! Well they better get used to it because when Obama passed his stimulus package, it just got a whole lot easier for moms to afford to go to college.
The limit for the Federal Pell Grants increased from $4050 to $5100 for low income students. All you have to do to see if you qualify is fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA form. Also, you can still take the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This means that the first $4000 of your higher education is tax free! These are free and you should not be asked to pay for any of these services. And unlike student loans, grants do not have to be repaid. There are many grants and scholarships out there, just waiting to be used. Be sure to check with the financial aid office at your college and ask for information on any scholarships or grants you may be eligible for.
The wonderful thing about these programs is that they can be used for courses taken online or in a "brick and mortar" school. This may make it easier for moms with young children to take the classes they need, but still care for their children. As with everything, make sure to research the school you wish to attend to ensure that it is a legitimate institution.
