The most sensational portable music player of all times is the iPod from APPLE. The iPod was launched on October 23, 2001. The current line-up of iPod includes the iPod Touch, the hard drive-based iPod Classic, the compact iPod Shuffle and the iPod Nano. The iPhone too functions as an iPod but comes under a different product market. Music can be transferred to an iPod only by using Apple's iTunes software from computers using their respective variants of Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. One can transfer music files, video files, photos, contacts and other applications on their iPods depending upon the model.
The iPods can play several audio formats which include AAC, MP3, AIFF, WAV, etc. The iPod Photo technology makes available the ability to display images of BMP, JPEG, GIFF TIFF and PNG formats. A few variants of the iPod can also play MPEG-4 and QuickTime video formats with some alterations in the playback size and quality. Initially, the iPod software could work only with Mac OS. The iPod software for Microsoft Windows was launched later in July 2002.] Unlike some other media players, Apple does not support the WMA audio format but converts the WMA files into playable file of Apple’s format. An iPod can be associated with only one host computer. Each time an iPod is connected to its host computer, iTunes synchronizes the entire music library or selected music playlists either manually or automatically. One can also give song ratings to a track. Connecting an iPod to a secondary computer; that is, on any computer other than the host computer on automatic synchronize mode would lead to formatting of the iPod. All its contents would be wiped and replaced with the secondary computer’s library.
The iPods usually have great sound quality and clarity but the third generation models have been criticised by users for not having good bass in their sound system. Apple also provides its own unique and simple looking remarkable quality headphones. The iPods are available in storage sizes ranging from as low as 1GB to the very recently launched 64 GB variant. The iPod is very user friendly and provides a great user interface. Its jog wheel is one of a kind and so is the listening experience.
All in all Apple’s iPod is arguably the best portable audio player in the market available today and also with the least number of drawbacks.
