Obama's Free Government Grants Aimed at Debt Relief - Is it Merely a Myth? Get the Read Deal

If you Google for debt relief grants, you'll see a lot of non-government web sites promising aid, but most programs for debt relief predate the Obama administration. The FTC ran Operation Short Change earlier this year, shutting down over 120 sites doing government grant fraud and other scams.

With almost a trillion dollars in the "stimulus package", it's easy to think that you and I should be good for some of that money beyond the modest tax cuts that increased our take-home pay a bit. However, there are programs that will help a lot of people lower their debt burden.

One boon to would-be first time homebuyers is a 10% tax credit (up to $8000) for buying a house; that program ends on November 30. However, it often takes a number of weeks between settling on a deal with the old owner and closing on a house, so you can't expect to go house-shopping on the Friday after Thanksgiving and expect to get things done in time to qualify.

For those folks who do get that aid, it will give them 10% extra to apply towards their mortgage, which often might give them enough equity to avoid paying mortgage insurance; thus, folks will have 10% less debt and have lower monthly payments.

Another program that can cut your debt load is the Energy Departments program giving a 30% tax credit for energy-efficient home improvements; that can reduce your debt once your refund comes early next year.

These tax credits are refundable, so even if you don't owe taxes, you can get money back from Uncle Sam. The new homebuyer credit can even be applied to your 2008 taxes; you can file an amended 2008 return and get the credit in a matter of weeks rather than waiting until early 2010.

You don't need any help in applying for this money; you just need to file an extra form with your tax form. Software packages like TurboTax can be expected to have them in their bag of tricks for 2009 if you're leery of going through the paperwork by yourself.
