| Date Palm and its fruits |
There are many palms that people call date palms, but actually there is only one true date palm tree. Its common name the Phoenix dactylifera or medjool date palm tree.
This palm tree has large greenish pinnate fronds. Fruits are formed only on female plants and only if pollinated. Pollination occurs naturally and manually. Dates are developed only in hot and dry climates. In hot humid climates they tend to drop from the tree before ripening. In cold climates they are not even formed.
Today dates are commonly cultivated for commercial purposes. The biggest producing countries in the Middle east and Africa. In United States dates can be grown only in southern California and Arizona. However, like a ornamental tree it is widely planted in Florida and Texas.
