Winterizing (or closing) swimming pools is necessary to ensure that your swimming pool will get through the harsh winter months unscathed and ready to be used again in the spring. The Closing process for pools is not very difficult. Regardless of its difficulty though, it is the responsibility of every pool owner to make the effort to properly close their pools for the winter. It is they who will suffer the consequences anyway.
Here is a list of the tools and equipment needed for properly winterizing swimming pools:
1.Pool Covers
Pool covers, well, cover the pool. You would not want all sorts of dirt and debris falling into and accumulating in your pool because it could damage your pool and it would be more difficult to clean afterward.
There are two kinds of pool covers: solid and mesh. Unlike solid covers, Mesh pool covers can only catch larger debris, but not smaller dirt and water. The idea of winterizing pools in to completely seal off your pool from everything, which is why solid pool covers are the ones you need for winterizing.
2.Winterizing Plugs
Winterizing plugs are cork like devices used to seal return jets and other holes on your pool where pipes connect to. Pool pumps need to be detached from pools and stored during winter to avoid damaging it. The holes on the pool where the pipes of the pump connect to will then be left as open holes. It is important to seal these holes with winterizing plugs because the water inside the pool needs to be retained.
3.Pool Chemicals
Pool waters will remain stagnant for the duration of winter. Various microorganisms may develop in it. Pool chemicals keep pool waters clean by fighting off and preventing these microorganisms from growing in the water.
There are also certain pool chemicals that prevent water from freezing. This is very important because frozen water can damage various parts of the pool.
4.Air Pillows
Air Pillows can be an alternative to anti-freeze chemicals. It is placed underneath the pool cover. It can’t stop water from freezing, but it can absorb the pressure frozen water would otherwise exert on certain areas of our pool.
It also helps lessen the amount of debris that may accumulate on top of the pool cover.
5.Water tubes
Water tubes are used to secure pool covers in place. It is filled with water to give it enough weight to hold the cover in place. It is attached on the edges of the pool cover.
