Five Million Homes Will Be Saved From Foreclosure by Loan Modifications – Is Yours One of Those?

The Federal funded loan modification program is looking to save from five to six million families from going homeless. The government is backing up its plan with 75 billion dollars. This money will end up going to the financial institutions involved to replace the money that the families will have deducted from their loan. You see, this program is slightly different from other previous plans.

This is basically how it works. The applicant has to prove that their family is in desperate need of help and will not be able to keep up with their mortgage payments on a loan that was taken out on their primary residence. The loan also has to originate before January 2009. These are just the basic requirements. There are others that include how much the principle owing is, and that ranges depending on how many units the house is.

Once approved, the interest rate will be dropped by 2% by the participating financial institute, and the monthly payment will be reduced to or at somewhere below 38% of the gross monthly income of that family. After the applicant makes three months of these new payments, the institute will deduct $1000 off of the principle every year that the family is a part of the program. This money is then replaced by the government.

In this type of deal, both the institute and the family win because one still gets their money, and the other saves. The end result being that hopefully the housing market will also take a turn for the better, therefore lifting the economy a little bit – something that it could really use right now.
