Today the mobile computing device seems to be the ubiquitous end point for so many applications, from carrying out transactions to downloading business software. Now it's reaching across many vertical sectors such as healthcare. Nurses, for instance, can use iphone applications to find out what to do about patient symptoms, measure and record blood glucose, insulin and medication etc.
More and more companies are realising the benefits of mobile computing and using mobile computing devices such as PDA devices, rugged handhelds and tablet PCs to connect their frontline staff to complete transactions at the point of sale. Also with the advent of cloud computing, remote working professionals and their organisations are able to interact with their employees and colleagues from any internet-connected computer or any mobile handset.
The retail and hospitality sectors have used mobile technology for some time. It is used for a number of point of sale (POS) applications such as scanning bar codes and checking pricing or reducing check-out lines at peak times, as well as for at-the-table credit card payments. There is also a growing trend for mobile marketing with targeted personal offers or coupons sent directly to customers' mobile phones or PDA devices, which then require redemption at the point of sale.
Today every business is under pressure to find ways to boost efficiency and the mobile option seems to be a popular and logical choice for delivering those solutions. However, as a retailer it is becoming increasingly more challenging to keep up with consumer demands as they have more choice than ever before and more expectations.
