Do You Need to Get Out of Debt? Use Government Grants to Help!

There is a lot of buzz going around about government grants available to help individuals get out of debt. While debt relief offered by the government is not as straight forward as that, there are cash awards that may help ease the burden. Also, grant availability changes frequently based upon government priorities, so it pays to research grant web sites often.

A simple keyword search on grants will reveal a catalogue of funding possibilities. There are grants awarded for business and education expenses. There are grants given to state and city governments for public programs that assist in debt relief. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a prime example. The federal government grants money to the states to help individuals and families who are behind on their energy bills.

Most of the time, grants are given to non-profit organizations or government institutions to provide education, support, and relief to Americans that qualify for their programs. For instance, there is financial assistance to families that are drowning in medical bills. This aid can be obtained through family services, health departments, and hospitals, all of whom received federal funding in the form of a grant.

Another example are the home foreclosure prevention assistance programs that are springing up around the country to deal with the escalating housing crisis. The Department of Housing receives grants (as does the individual states) to help those who are at risk of losing their homes. The Department of Housing even offers back rent assistance to those who qualify.

Those that need assistance with credit card and unsecured loan debt only have one option to date, and that is to visit a credit counseling organization. The only grants the government offers for unsecured debt is to these non-profit institutions to provide education in budgeting and debt management.

Ultimately, it pays to "follow the money." Watch to see where the ever-changing federal grants are awarded. This will give you a very clear indication on what agencies are prepared to help relieve your debt.
