| Obama Loosens Purse Strings; Increases Scholarships for Moms |
In yet another attempt to stimulate the lagging economy, President Barack Obama has increased the maximum amount of the Federal Pell Grants to $5350 for the 2009-2010 year. He has also increased the number of students receiving the funding to close to 7 million for the same year. He hopes this increase will make higher education more accessible to individuals who, among other things, demonstrate significant financial need. For many struggling single mothers, this is great news!
For the low income mother there are also substantial tax credits to be had. According to the American Opportunity Tax Credit Program, there is a $2500 tax credit for money spent on tuition. The tax credits are further increased for families with children which is great news for mothers.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect for the single mother is the fact that the grant monies are also available for online study. Choosing to study online makes sense for those who value being able to stay home with their children or who would like to be able to continue to work full time while studying.
With the pursuit of a higher education now within reach, many mothers are free to take the first steps in making their education dreams a reality. With these changes recently implemented, the President has shown us that he is serious about taking care of the mothers who are themselves so tirelessly taking care this country's next generation.
