Why Think About Them
The global economy is suffering, some countries in their worst recessions since the second world war. America is no different. Job loss is rampant, and as jobs disappear, so do homes and livelihoods. Debts are growing deeper and becoming harder to repay as resources dwindle, and with heavy interest rates on credit cards and mortgages, the minimum payments – when payment can be made at all – aren't enough to keep the average family afloat. More than ever, it might be time for a government program to help pull Americans out of the quicksand of debt and back onto stable ground.
What They Are
Government grants aimed at debt relief are exactly what they sound like – funds whose sole purpose is to reduce or eliminate the crushing weight of debt and interest burdening many Americans. In effect, this action transfers the debt from a struggling American family to the indebted-but-stable American government. The thought is that tax revenue can better pay off the government's budget deficit if the average American isn't paying more in debt interest than in taxes, so the government's investment will pay off long-term. In theory, everybody wins.
How to Find Them
The Internet is often NOT the best way to find government grants for debt relief. There are many "scam artists" and phishers looking to steal personal information in the form of "application forms," as well as debt consolidation companies posing as government-based relief. These grants are readily available through your local social services, provided you can prove you are not in a position to pay off your debts. Additional grants are available for specific types of debt, such as medical debts or debts incurred while starting a business.
What This Means to You
The bottom line is that even though many Americans are struggling to cope with debt, government help is available to get them through these difficult times. If you feel you are one of the many Americans in this position, contact your local social services office to see for what types of assistance you qualify.
