If you've spent any time on the internet lately, you'll have noticed banner ads shouting out "OBAMA WANTS MOMS TO RETURN TO SCHOOL!" But what does that mean, exactly? The economy has been undergoing such turmoil that it's one of the best times to go back to school, become highly qualified, and enhance your job prospects. Obama's 'Moms Return to School' grant is a scholarship program designed to help mothers-especially single, working moms-go back to school and attain a better future.
To get this grant, you need to be a mom and show financial need as determined by the FAFSA. I believe it's an excellent plan. Many single mothers struggle with supporting their children, and don't have the time or ability to even consider juggling tuition bills on top of it. Skilled, qualified workers will be back in demand when the economy turns around, as it surely will. These grants could make it much more possible for mothers to go back to school and create a brighter future for themselves and their children. Many moms get married and quit their jobs, and when they return to the workforce they find it difficult to find jobs with large gaps in their working history. Increased education and new training can make up for this gap in employer's minds, and give moms the opportunity to advance in whatever careers they choose.
My own mom went back to school when I was a kid, and graduated with a 4.0 when I was 14. I'm so proud of her-she now has the ability to make a difference in the world beyond her home with her degree in education. All mothers, and all people, should have that opportunity too.
