Self-cleaning and safety glass

Self cleaning glass is a special type of glass that keeps itself free from dirt through natural process. The self cleaning glass is obtained by coating the glass with the thin covering of titanium oxide. Titanium oxide is the preferred material since it is chemically stable, hence, easier to store and also reasonably available. The glass cleans itself in two phases. In the first phase the dirt particles are broken using the ultraviolet rays present in sunlight. And in this process the glass is rendered hydrophilic (that is water loving). During the next stage the water washes away the dirt particles leaving the glass from dirt.

Meanwhile, safety glass is a glass that is made up of two sheets of glass with an intermediate layer of plastic. It is also called as shatterproof glass. The safety glass does not break into sharp pieces like the normal glass, but it rather breaks into small cubes. And this ensures that the glass pieces upon breaking do not cause injury or bruises. The safety glass is used in the car windshields, windows and doors for public buildings. Safety glass is also stronger than the conventional glass. It can hence handle the temperature shifts and severe impacts.

Cutting the glass is not that easy. To obtain glass cuts one would need a glass cutter, a drawing board over which the glass that has to be cut can be placed conveniently. Glass cuts can be made to obtain glass pieces of amazing shapes and sizes. The glass cutter that is used to cut the glass is pressed tightly against the glass and then line is inscribed with the help of a ruler to form a split in the surface of the glass. The split may then be widened.
