Most construction accidents are preventable
Accidents are an unfortunate reality in the workplace, especially within the construction industry. Statistics across the board show that the majority of construction accidents are extremely preventable - usually caused by disregarding safety regulations and by using faulty construction gear.
Construction companies can dramatically reduce the number of workplace injuries and fatalities by enforcing protocol and the proper use of the right equipment.
The following are just some of the tools necessary to maintain workplace safety:
Personal protection equipment This includes masks, helmets, boots, etc. When accidents do occur, personal equipment can save lives. It is essential that workers are provided with the proper protection and that the use of that protection is enforced at all times.
Guard rails Even the most careful workers are prone to trips and falls on construction sites. Without a guard rail, a simple slip at great heights can result in a preventable death.
Man anchors When its not possible to install guard rails on a high-elevation site, a man anchor is a must in order to maintain safety. Man anchors are safety lines that attach a person in a harness to a floor clamp.
Walkways Roofs often have weak spots that may give way under pressure resulting in a death almost every year in the UK. A properly installed plastic walkway can easily prevent such an accident.
Durable rubbish chutes The importance of proper waste disposal should not be overlooked. A cluttered workspace can cause falls; and spills from leaky barrels can cause slips. A workplace should always have as many chutes as are needed to allocate all of a sites waste.
