| Obama's Giving Money for Scholarships, but Will Momma Go Back to School? |
At first glance, President Obama's plan to encourage mothers to attend school using scholarship money as a carrot sounds flawless. After all, mothers need education, right? Single mothers in particular struggle to make ends meet and provide for their children at the same time. For them, the difference between a high school education and an Associates of Arts at a local community college can be the difference between barely scraping by and saving a few thousand dollars a year. In other words, it's the difference between getting nowhere and getting somewhere – and that's priceless. I expected the mothers I know to agree with me, but I was surprised to find that Obama's scholarship bill may not make as much of a difference as I thought.
One single mother I know, Mary, complained that the scholarship plan solves every problem but the main one: time. "I have no time to go to school," she said. "Including commuting and dropping off my son, work is a nine hour day for me. By the time I get home it's nearly 6:30, and I only have about 90 minutes to spend with my son before he falls asleep. Does Obama really expect me to spend those two hours in a class? I might get a degree and make more money, but my children won't even know me. That's too high a price to pay."
How could Obama solve Mary's problem, then? Perhaps the scholarship program could provide fewer, more comprehensive scholarships instead of many small ones. If ten women like Mary received $5,000, none of them could go to school. But if one woman like Mary received $50,000, she might have a chance to make a better life for her family through knowledge.
