President Barack Obama's College Scholarship Program for the Single Working Mom

Single parenthood is hard and there's no getting around that. With bills to pay, kids to raise, and gas to buy, sometimes the only way to get ahead is to borrow money or max out the credit cards. It's a fact of life these days and it can be pretty discouraging.

If you talk to a single mom and ask her if she's ever considered going back to school, she's liable to look at you like you've lost your senses. In a perfect world maybe – but the harsh reality of being a single mom is that there's just no money left for things like that. But now things have started to change and President Obama is giving a lot of working moms a second chance to return to school with improvements in the Federal Pell Grant.

    What Are We Talking About?

The Federal Pell Grant has been around for a long time but it has never been as available to working single moms as it is now. And best of all, the limit has been raised from $4,500 to $5,100. That extra $600 can make a huge difference. Not only can recipients of the grant pay for tuition and books but they may have money left over for other things that are necessary for school. This is the boost that many single working moms have been waiting for and now is the time to take advantage of it.

One of the best things about this grant is that you don't have to quit your job to take advantage of it. So the Pell Grant is the icing on the cake. You can keep your job and go to school and still have a little money in your pocket for the extras. All you have to do is apply and wait for approval.

What Are My Chances of Being Approved?

You have a fair chance of being approved but you won't know if you don't apply. The fact is that there are many single moms applying for these grants and though the government has some deep pockets, the funding for this program is not unlimited.

Not everyone who applies for the Pell Grant will get it. There are so many people applying that the money may run out before everyone has taken advantage of the opportunity. But you can't give up even if you aren't approved. If you want to turn your dream into a reality you have to apply for more scholarships. There is money available but if no one applies, no one will win them. Believe it or not, there are some scholarships that have no applicants. Some of them offer even higher rewards than the Federal Pell Grant.

Applying for scholarships can be done online. There are some organizations that are specifically looking for moms who want to improve their educational standing and there are others who have no such stipulations attached to them. Many have special requirements of meritorious achievement in a certain field of study and others are offered by companies who want to encourage students who are planning to work in their particular industry.

Apply For As Many Scholarships As You Can Find

After you have applied for the Federal Pell Grant, don't stop there. Check out the various web sites that offer scholarship money and apply, apply, apply. The more offers you fill out, the better your chances of being gifted with a scholarship that does not have to be repaid.
