In A Digital Age, Are Paper Shredders Still Necessary? Asks Office Zone

A lot of communication is now done via cell phone and computer. Is a paper shredder still a necessity or is it an antiquated piece of equipment reminiscent of a paranoid period of time? Office Zone says yes, it is still needed. Office Zone explains why.

Moving towards a paperless society is certainly a goal that would be nice for all of us to reach. It would cut down on the need to use paper and would cut down on a lot of waste. Unfortunately the goal towards going paperless is still years away and paper use has actually increased among many industries.

Because we still use paper, a lot of sensitive information can also be easily found and printed on paper. A discarded sheet of paper can be easily retrieved by a criminal and used to create fake accounts, apply for credit cards and much more. In most states, the practice of dumpster diving is perfectly legal.

An example of document that would contain sensitive information on it includes bills, credit card applications, receipts, bank printouts and more. These are all documents that should never see the light of a garbage can. It is recommended to keep a paper shredder near the garbage can to help cut down

It is recommended for home paper shredders to be placed in a convenient location, preferably near where the mail is opened. This will help cut down on the habit of throwing sensitive information away.

In a business environment, it is recommended to place a departmental shredder in a centralized location. This could be a larger shredder for use on a single floor in an office building, or several medium-size shredders that can be placed near departments of 4-8 people. Placing several smaller paper shredders (http://www.officezone.com/shred1.htm) around the office may be more convenient for people to use.

Office Zone has created a useful paper shredder resources guide that includes detailed information regarding good shredder practices, FACTA, HIPAA and more. This includes video demos, articles, FAQs and guides. This paper shredder resource guide can be found here (http://www.officezone.com/paper-shredder-resources.htm).
