| How to help you executive coaching client set goals effectively? |
When your coaching client is setting a goal, she is committing his time and resources. She would probably not wish to see them wasted (This is true of both life and executive coaching, but in the executive coaching arena, accountability tends to carry more severe repercussions for failure). One of the values that you can give your client is helping her define her goals to be effective.
There are five basic questions that you need to ask your client, and have her define her goal according to the answers.
1. How does this goal fit into your bigger purpose?
There is no point investing time and effort in achieving something that is not on the path to where your client wishes to be. Make sure that the goal is a move in the right direction.
2. Is this goal really worth the effort?
It is not enough just to be on the right road. Your client's goal should be ambitious, and advance her along it significantly.
3. How will you know if you are advancing towards your goal?
You should assure that your client defines a goal that she can measure. If she is unable answer this question, work with your client to redefine the goal. Make sure that your client is measuring results, not effort.
4. How fast can you get there?
Any executive coaching client should already know that you must set a binding time – frame for achieving a goal. However, if your client is sure that she can achieve the goal within the frame she defined, convince her to cut it by half. Make your client challenge herself. She will be surprised at what she can achieve when she does.
5. How can you avoid being sidetracked by the other things?
The best way to keep on track is to have your client's advance monitored. This can be done by a spouse, the boss, a friend, or the coach - you. Set a system by which your client is committed to report on her advance and get feedback. Preferably, the monitor should be someone who can give insightful feedback.
