| Balance and Strength - What Are the Benefits? |
Strength involves a lot more than just pushing heavy weight. True strength is gained by combining skill and total muscular control. If you can push 400 lbs. off of your chest in a bench press then good for you, but can you execute a one-arm one-legged push-up? Can you perform a hand stand? These feats of strength combine both skill and total muscular control. True strength is about balance and applying your strength!
So what are the benefits of balance training? Well, I think the better question is what is the down side to balance training? The answer to this one is none. By incorporating more stability related movements and exercises into your training you increase your stabilizing muscles and make your body overall more resistant to injury. Better stabilization will also promote performance and further core strength and stability. Strength training and balance can also be combined. For instance, if you normally do romanian deadlifts (RDL's) then to make it more of a stabilizing drill attempt a single-legged RDL. You really have to concentrate on keeping your body upright and heavy weight is not a necessary element here for this drill to be effective. Take the necessary time to train your body to become more stable.
Remember that balance is about creating control. With more total muscular control you can execute more dynamic lifts and intense movements in order to better your athletic performance and to achieve optimal fitness. Don't sell yourself short. Make sure that you study various movements that you can perform to better your balance training and from there you can work on becoming more creative and dynamic in your choice of exercises!
