As is the case with any mental disorder that is an expression of biological, situational, and intrapsychic factors, medication is a limited remedy. Although antidepressants such as imipramine are effective in many cases of panic, symptom breakthrough with the use of drugs alone is not uncommon. Medication does not always relieve the general anxiety state associated with panic disorder and anticipatory fears that panic will often persist.


The prevalence of anxiety disorders in the general population is greater than that of any other mental disorder, including depression and substance abuse.


Sensory deprivation and sensory overload are the extremes of a continuum whose middle ground is optimal sensory stimulation. Both extremes lead to anxiety and disruption of behavior. The individual, is able to function normally only when stimulation is within the optimal range.


After repeatedly experiencing acute anxiety in a variety of contexts, the individual may develop an overall sense of becoming less and less able to competently manage anticipated episodes. Anxious persons seem to have lost, or perhaps never have had, the ability to generalize their skills in one area to deal effectively with contingencies in another. As a result, they may require that everything be carefully planned or resolved to the last detail, before they will take the risk of starting any new undertaking.


It is estimated that between 7 and 12 million individuals are agoraphobic, with 75% of these being women.


If individuals conclude that their present abilities compare unfavorably with what they think they should be, or what others think they should be, they will experience some degree of anxiety. The severity of anxious feelings depends on how badly individuals expect they will do in a situation, how much control they will have in a particular event, and how critically they will be judged afterward.


Anxiety may develop as a consequence of the experience of sexual failure. Worries about sexual performance will diminish sexual response, which may eventually result in avoiding sexual interactions as an anxiety-provoking situation and in some cases in loss of sexual interest or desire.
