Digital TV Receiver: Will Your Customers Lose Their Signal?

By June of this year, all of the US will be switching from analog to digital TV. Will your customers lose their signal?

** Will Everyone in the US be Able to Receive a Digital Signal? **
No, they won’t. People with older sets and some of the smaller devices with television functionality such as cell phones, portable TVs, and car DVDs are going to be left with nothing but static. At this time in the US, which is using ATSC, there hasn’t been a way found to convert car DVDs, mobile phones or a portable TV of any kind.

** Will This be an Issue for Resellers? **
It might. If you are going to be selling the digital TV converters and assorted products, you need to be sure that your customers fully understand the situation and the limitations as noted above. For example, if someone in the US buys a converter box to switch his DVD and television to digital TV, it won’t work and yes, this could be a problem for both you and the customer.

** Should You Offer a Refund if it Doesn’t Work? **
You should. After all, it isn’t the customer’s fault and honestly, the whole field of digital TV is still in its fledgling stages here in the US and in many other places around the globe. It’s difficult for a customer to get a good handle on what will or will not work.

However, we can qualify that statement by saying that before you refund, you should first determine exactly why the device won’t work. If the customer has purchased the converter for an older model television set, they may just need to either install an external antenna or replace their existing external antenna with one that will pick up a stronger signal, necessary for digital TV.

If, however, the customer was trying to convert their mobile phone or portable TV, you may as well give their money back because there is no fix for that problem.

** How Can You Protect Your Reputation & Avoid Problems and Refunds? **
The smartest thing you could do is employ this old adage: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

In other words, try your best to educate and inform your customers before they purchase digital TV equipment about what will and won’t work.

For example, if you have a customer from the UK order a digital converter box that was made for the ATSC used in the US, don’t send the order though to your dropship supplier until the order is corrected! Or if you have a customer in the US that buys a DVB-T converter that was made to be used in China, it won't work. Get in touch with your customer immediately; let him know why the equipment he bought won’t work where he lives, and then offer to change the order for him to the correct item.

That way, you will have gained a happy customer and enhanced your selling reputation, and kept a problem from rearing its ugly head!

Remember---a stitch in time saves nine!
