How Can You Get A Mortgage Modification Under Obama's New Plan?

Obama's new plan for mortgage modification has shaken up the way lenders handle their borrowers who are risking foreclosure. Mortgage modification is now easier to get than it has ever been before. But how can a homeowner that needs assistance get it now that it's just within reach?

The Home Affordable Modification Plan provides $75 billion dollars in incentives that lenders will receive for cooperating with their borrowers. These incentives are to make up for the amount that lenders lose on loan modification and does nothing to hurt you, the homeowner.

On top of the incentives, Obama's new plan has also standardized the requirements lenders place on mortgage modifications. So while the requirements are still a little tough, the lenders that were impossible to negotiate with before are forced to be more open with their negotiations.

You can get a mortgage modification by simply calling your lender and asking what the requirements are and what documents they need from you to get the process started. Your lender is going to need proof of your income (bank statements) and income taxes, as well as documentation of your bills – on top of the application and hardship letter you must write.

It seems like a lot, but it's really not once you get started.

Getting the documents together is the easy part. Be very precise with your application and be careful not to make any mistakes, and carefully write the mortgage modification hardship letter to give the lender the correct amount of information.

Next, if you are not comfortable with your qualification status or don't feel like you could do it alone, there are representatives for the FHA across the country who will give you free consultation on your application and will even negotiate with your lender to get the best interest rate. These representatives area key part of Obama's Home Affordable Modification Plan and are there to work for you, not your lender.

If you do not utilize a mortgage modification specialist, there are a few ways you could submit your application. Many lenders provide a streamlined process from their website to apply, but if you are not comfortable with that you could also mail it in, fax it, or take your application to your nearest branch in person.

No matter the method you choose, be sure to give them your hardship letter at the same time to cut down on processing time. Obama's new plan does make getting a mortgage modification easier, but it's going to take a fair share of effort on your part to get the results you need.
