The prevalence of anxiety disorders in the general population is greater than that of any other mental disorder, including depression and substance abuse.

After repeatedly experiencing acute anxiety in a variety of contexts, the individual may develop an overall sense of becoming less and less able to competently manage anticipated episodes. Anxious persons seem to have lost, or perhaps never have had, the ability to generalize their skills in one area to deal effectively with contingencies in another. As a result, they may require that everything be carefully planned or resolved to the last detail, before they will take the risk of starting any new undertaking.

Fear is an inborn response to certain stimuli that becomes differentiated from other feelings in the first year of life. The startle reaction which newborn infants show seems to be a precursor of later normal fear. Any intense, sudden, or unexpected stimulus to the infant will cause him to throw up both hands and feet and perhaps cry- After about age six months, fear becomes recognizably different from startle and is seen in response to strangers. Fear of animals begins a bit later.
The common fears change as the child grows

Although many individuals experience some degree of apprehension in everyday social situations, the experience of increased anxiety for nonphobics is usually not a serious concern or problem. For the social phobic, however, such anxiety can be excessive and debilitating, as in the case of a musician who must rely on public performances for financial security but whose performance technique is compromised by sweating and trembling as a result of increased physiological arousal.

If individuals conclude that their present abilities compare unfavorably with what they think they should be, or what others think they should be, they will experience some degree of anxiety. The severity of anxious feelings depends on how badly individuals expect they will do in a situation, how much control they will have in a particular event, and how critically they will be judged afterward.

The word stress is used constantly in connection with emotional states; it appears almost as often in discussions of anxiety as does the word anxiety itself. The expression seems to be employed in a number of different ways, visually without a specific explanation of the user's intent. This usage has resulted in a fair amount of confusion, and suggests that there is no consensus on its meaning.

As a subjective experience, anxiety may reflect a personality predisposition which tends to characterize an individual in most situations, or it may be an experience which is known only in periods of stress.

Anxiety is the unpleasant emotion associated with a feeling of impending danger that is not obvious to the observer. Fear is a very similar feeling that arises as a normal response to realistic danger or threat. Timidity indicates a lasting tendency to show fear easily. Panic denotes a sudden upsurge of acute terror. Phobic anxiety is the anxiety which occurs only in contact with a particular situation or object.
