Thousands of Central Florida children whose families have little or no health insurance now have a medical clinic to help them, thanks in large part to attorney John Morgan and his wife and law partner, Ultima Morgan.
The Destiny Foundation, a nonprofit Orlando ministry that helps the working poor, had opened the facility more than a year ago but lacked the funds to staff it full time. Workers were able to see patients and give immunizations only once a month.
But on Monday, founder Scott George announced the Morgans had stepped forward with a $750,000 commitment for the first year, paying for three full-time doctors and helping as many as 10,000 children. Privately, John Morgan said his financial backing would continue indefinitely.
U.S. Census Bureau figures show a desperate need. In 2008, there were 797,000 Florida children without health insurance -- nearly 19 percent -- giving the state the third highest rate in the nation.
Morgan, who made his fortune by building one of the nation's largest law firms and specializing in medical malpractice, appeared at the ribbon-cutting ceremony and joked about the irony. But he also said he expected the clinic to become a "role model" for other communities.
And the new facility's name? Appropriately, "The People's Clinic" -- after Morgan's slogan, "for the people." To receive care, children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and live at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
