Metabolic Conditioning - An Explanation of Optimal Strength and Conditioning!

What is metabolic conditioning? Well, these days you more often hear the phrase general physical preparedness. This is a system of training that is hugely beneficial for both the general population, but especially for athletes of every sport. You see being a former collegiate strength and conditioning assistant I have a firm belief in what a properly planned strength and conditioning program can do for a winning team. So the factors that make up this type of training include helping the individual or athlete to develop a series of physical traits. To obtain optimal metabolic conditioning you should develop a high level of strength, endurance, and flexibility. The more an individual can optimize all of these areas of physical prowess the chances of them destroying their competition is greater.

I will give you an example of how metabolic conditioning works. First of all I would like to ask you a question. How many athletes are out there in the world that can run a marathon in less than 2 1/2 hours? The answer is probably hundreds. You see these particular athletes have a very high level of cardiovascular endurance. They are solely conditioned for the purpose of hammering out a great distance and enduring the miles that lie ahead. Now I want to ask you another question. How many athletes are out there that can bench press 400 lbs.? Once again, the answer is probably hundreds. Just like the marathon runner these guys have a very high level of muscular strength. This is why they can blast out the heavy weight on the barbell. Now I want to ask you the third and final question. How many athletes on the planet can blast out 400 lbs on the bench press and run a marathon in under 2 1/2 hours? The answer to this question is none! That's right, I said none. The fact is that the two athletes I described only care about training and enhancing the one single variable that they are trying to improve on being either endurance or strength. This is where metabolic conditioning is so important. What if an athlete could condition their body to optimally gain strength and endurance at the same time? This is where the superior method of metabolic conditioning comes into play. You see the key is focusing on trying to better the body in multiple areas of strength, endurance, and flexibility which make up the total athlete! Imagine what a football player would be able to do by being properly conditioned in this fashion. They would be able to forcefully do high levels of intense work over and over again to where down the competition. This is what makes the optimal athlete better, therefore there is a chance that one can potentially win every game that they play in!

The bottom line is that you should try to optimize your body in as many areas across the spectrum of fitness as you can. Be smart and try to enhance your body by improving it in every area of it's physical ability!
