Building a relationship requires delicate balance in order for it to stay afloat. Interestingly enough, one of the things that create problems is getting so close that both of you become comfortable with the status quo. If you would like to encourage your boyfriend to call more often, stop your calls. When he does not hear from you for some time, he will pick up the phone and call you. And he won't do it just once.
