| Jodhpurs & Breeches What Are They & Why Do We Use Them? |
Jodhpurs are tight fitting riding trousers that are ankle length often with turn ups at the end of the leg. They are designed to be worn with long boots or Jodhpur boots with chaps or Jodhpur clips to prevent them from riding up. Most jodhpurs have knee and seat padding or reinforcement for comfort and durability. With "sticky bum" material on some designs you also get security in the saddle. They come in a vast variety of colours from white and beige topink green or even patterned. Jodhpurs are worn for showing, cross country events, when show jumping, during dressage competitions and for everyday riding. The colour worn is usually dependent on the type of riding to be done, neutral colours are not often practical when galloping across muddy fields!
Breeches finish mid calf and are designed to be worn with long riding boots only. Shortening the length of the leg gives more freedom of movement at the ankle. Seat patches on breeches for added security and leg control are a favourite for dressage riders giving them perfect suitability from the design, where as breeches with padding and grip at the knee would be more suitable for show jumpers. Breeches are more commonly seen in neutral colours.
Both breeches and jodhpurs are made from breathable, slightly flexible material allowing the rider freedom of movement whilst not overheating.
Why wear jodhpurs?
