| Having a Ball - Weird USA Festivals |
Apart from the really bad puns and innuendos galore, and the general sense that this is all just a little “tacky”, festivals across the USA celebrating animal and fowl testicles are becoming more and more popular.
Perhaps in these tough times we look for more bizarre things than usual to entertain us. The more ridiculous the event, the more effective the escape. And certainly not much could be more bizarre than entire festivals devoted to testicles – how to cook them, how to eat them, and how to make as many bad jokes as possible about them.
In bad taste? Probably!
Fun? Definitely!
Clinton, Montana's bluntly named Testicle Festival ( rated a top event by Top Events USA at http://www.topeventsusa.com ) is a celebration for those who enjoy bull’s testicles (more palatably referred to as Rocky Mountain oysters or prairie oysters) served deep fried.
This delicacy can also be referred to “cowboys caviar” and “Montana tendergroin”.
Rocky Mountain oysters – usually buffalo, boar, or bull testicles - became popular on the cattle ranches of the American West where castration of young bulls was a regular occurrence. Rather than waste them, the cowboys decided to eat them.
They are usually skinned, coated in a seasoned batter and deep-fried, and apparently have a chewy and yet juicy texture and taste like chicken with a subtle, offal overtone.
The Montana Testicle Festival serves over two and a half tons of testicles each year, and offers festivities including a bull chip throwing contest, hairy chest competitions and “bull shit” bingo.
Eagle, Idaho, hosts the Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed during Eagle Fun Days in June each year. The charitable event benefiting the Eagle Volunteer Firefighters Association now caters to thousands guests each year and claims to be the world’s largest Rocky Mountain oyster feed.
At Virginia City’s annual Mountain Oyster Fry in March, vendors compete with different recipes, some wrapping the testicles in bacon, others making meatballs out of them.
Paying tribute to cowboy traditions, the Testicle Festival in Woodruff, Utah dip their bulls testicles in beer batter before frying them. In 2008 they served more than 250 pounds of this delicacy.
And at the annual Testicle Festival at Mama's Place Bar and Grill in Elderon, Wisconsin about 100 pounds of testicles kept over 300 gourmets happy for the day.
The Annual Olean Testicle Festival, Missouri, draws thousands of visitors each year for testicles that are all from turkeys. And there are two more annual Turkey Testicle Festivals that take place in both Byron (in October) and in Huntley (November), Illinois, not far from Chicago. At the festival in Huntley more than 1,200 pounds of turkey testicles are served each year.
All around the country various kinds of balls are on offer, from lambs testicles to goat, bull to calf.
Who knew!
Less astonishing and more predictable are the slogans and tag lines like “I like my nuts warm” that accompany these festivals, but the best one of all is the official T-shirt from the Clinton Testicle Festival that proudly says:
“I had a ball at the Testicle Festival!”
