Clothes and Packing Smart

I know a couple that often take a 4 day bicycle riding holiday – this does sound like an oxymoron to me, I don’t think riding a pushbike fifty miles a day sounds like a holiday.

But anyway, they have too pack minimally. There is just not much room, especially when you need to carry a tent and your food. So for them packing clothes comes down to the bare minimum.

Basically, one change of clothing and a waterproof jacket is all they have room for. They rinse their dirty clothes out when they can and dry them as they cycle.

Now, while I don’t suggest you need to pack this light because I’m damn sure I couldn’t or wouldn’t, it is possible to take less.

It’s easy to think you need all these fashion outfits, with matching shoes and accessories. But, truly you don’t. A holiday is a time to relax and unwind. To sit back and rest, it need not be a fashion parade.

I know that by about day 2 of my holiday I have relaxed and have forgotten about make up, heels, jewelry, hair (though I still need to match – stems from my childhood a need to always wear matching clothes).

So, the first step is to realize you really don’t need so many clothes on holiday.

Step 2 is to consider where you are going? what you will be going? what the weather will be like? This will assist in determining what we need. Notice I said need and not want.

Now, that we have that figured out the next step is to get out everything you want to take. Lay it on your bed, so we can have a good look at it.

Determine how many days you will be away for and then look at how many outfits you have out. I think some need to be put back.

That pink blouse is beautiful, but if it only goes with a floral skirt that nothing else will go with, then it needs to be left at home. Choose clothes that can mix and match and that only require one pair of shoes.

Truly, you don’t need or really want to take 5 pairs of shoes for a week long holiday.

Also choose clothes that are going to travel well. The last thing you want to do is spend hours ironing all your clothes when you get to your destination. Choose clothes that don’t wrinkle or crease much.

With today’s modern fabrics, there are heaps to choose from and I often buy clothes specifically because I know how well they will travel.

If there is a small chance of some cool weather, just take one jumper – one that will go with everything like a plain black or brown knit. You don’t want the extra weight and space loss from taking several coats only to find out you didn’t wear any.

Stick to this plan and your next holiday won’t cause you any back pain.

Happy Traveling
