Fantastic Video Editing Fun On Your Desktop

During the last decennium or so the possibilities for the home video enthusiast to bring about really amazing end results have seen steady improvement. With the ordinary run of the mill PCs being sold today, it is possible to have a private video editing studio that is almost of a professional caliber. Although it seems very long ago when you think about it, it is worth recalling that this was nothing but a wet dream to video enthusiasts in the early 90s. Now let's have a brief look at video editing of today, from the viewpoint of the typical consumer.

Linear and Non-Linear

Video editing as it is done today is what is called non-linear editing. This means that your are able to jump to any part of your material - in what order it was filmed does not matter - unlike the older (tape based) linear editing where you had to go to the specific location of a particular shot manually.

Besides being much more handy and a lot faster than the old tape based editing systems (think ordinary VCR), the non-linear software based editing system also preserves the quality of the original footage. When tapes are used the content to be edited are transferred first to another tape and then to a master tape. In such a scheme the audio and picture quality worsens with every copy, a process referred to as generation loss.

A non-linear system maintains the original quality of the recording, as it is really the original material that is played back in the sequence the editing software dictates

What's Needed Under The Hood

There is no denying that you will need a powerful computer in order to work with video. Nevertheless, provided that your PC isn't many years old, chances are that it can become a good platform to run video editing software on. Or at least you may upgrade your machine to the required horsepower by investing in more RAM and a bigger hard drive.

Although some people will still disagree, today there really isn't that much of a difference if your computer of choice is a (Windows) PC or a Mac.

A Private Cutting Room

Depending on your level of ambition, your private little videostudio can be reasonably affordable of quite expensive. Basically maintaining a more modern version of the family photo album may perhaps not call for the latest, professional grade appliances. On the other hand, if you want the end result to be really impressive, you will have to invest a little bit more - both time and money vise.

However, as there is no video editing software capable of doing what was reserved only for professional movie people a few decades ago, and there really is not reason for buying a camera that records in SD any more, home video producers have never had it this good.
