Selecting an IT Outsourcing Consultant


The concept of IT subcontracting has gone past the phase of showing its value and significance; the existence of a large number of offshore outsourcing organizations running successfully for more than a couple years is living proof of this. But I am not articulating that each IT manager has had a great experience from subcontracting his internal projects. Failures such as these cannot be attributed wholly to one factor, but one of the most noteworthy things is the selection of a skilled IT service provider. Let’s look what we can do in this regard, to help make outsourcing a successful experience for us.

The outsourcing company you employ for the task is basically your strategic partner in a sense. So you need to view them as just that, and you must do some future planning for the forthcoming years. Choice of a subcontracting firm isn’t any less trouble than choice of smart in-house employee. You don’t desire to wake up one day to observe that your Indian service provider can’t fulfill your needs any longer because they aren't upgrading their awareness about the recent technologies. So do your preparation and understand where you will be standing one year from now. And see that your IT outsourcing consultant stays informed with the latest events in the global market.

Besides this, you have to always keep in mind what duties you have outsourced and what you haven’t. This is really critical when you share some of the duties and oversee a couple IT projects internally or on your own. You must tell your subcontracting consultant just what you expect from him AND what you don’t ask from him. If you pay by the hour and the other guy spends his time on something you didn’t require him to perform, you will be the loser at the end of the day. In addition, it is advisable to have these obligations in written somewhere, even if you have them electronically like in a PDF file. It is simpler to show him that written document anytime if you see he isn’t performing his job as agreed.

Finally, you need to ensure that your subcontracting firm is trustworthy, and indisputable testimonials from past customers are a good way to prove this. You will observe that firms with an established offshore set up are more trustworthy as they have put in a big amount of money as capital investment. Yeah, I know we have our share of Madoffs, but let’s accept they aren’t happening everyday. It’s not a norm everywhere but it would be very helpful for you if you can interview and select candidates from amongst the workforce your outsourcing firm has available for the project. It’s important to have the ability to communicate with the very programmers who will work on your task. And you need to get dedicated staff or the developers would give preference to that other higher-paying customer in case of a deadline clash.
