Are TV and Music The Solution To Bodybuilding Boredom?
Many bodybuilders who have been training for muscle gains find that weight lifting workout sessions can become mentally difficult to withstand, especially during high volume periods, and this emotional barrier causes many to forego the bodybuilding process before significant progress is achieved. Yet, there is a proven method that increases motivation, and can even inspire a bodybuilder to put forth far more effort than otherwise seems realistic.
Young and old alike use music in their spare time to lift emotions when feeling less than stellar, and this is one of the most powerful weight training workout aids for enhancing focus. On the surface, it would seem that any background noise may in fact distract a bodybuilder from his weight training workout obligations, but this is not the case, as the mind, when focusing on a weight training set absent music, is more likely to begin recoiling from pending stress, while music can provide a welcome distraction from this reality, one that amazingly can cause a bodybuilder to hoist more weight and perform a set with far more intensity than otherwise would be possible.
During times when I have selected music that I either have not listened to for some time, or when hearing a newly discovered song that I find appealing, I've been able to approach the weights with a level of intensity and focus that has been impossible for me using any other technique. But such an mental uplifting obviously requires selecting a certain type of music, and this will differ depending on our own individual preferences. If you are not one who listens to music, load a program such as Itunes on your computer and sample some free radio stations that play various types of music (80s, 90s, current, rock, pop, etc), and see if you can locate music that seemingly causes your blood to boil and goose bumps to surface, and when you begin to experience an adrenalin surge through a specific song, you know that this is ideal for a weight training workout session, and should become a part of your arsenal.
In addition to music, I have recently started to alternate using songs with watching TV programming during my workouts, as I've found that a weight training routine which otherwise may seem redundant can become substantially entertaining with the proper television programming. I recommend recording your favorite shows on video tape or DVR, and play them back during your weight training workouts (training at home thankfully allows me with the luxury of doing so regularly), as this technique can also distract you from weight training workout stress, and put you in a frame of mind where sustaining a 60-90 minute battle with weights becomes far more realistic.
I have not experienced the same motivational surge with TV as when playing energizing music, so the correct songs clearly have a far more positive emotional impact on a weight training workout session, but television, for me, provides another form of entertainment that can cause a bodybuilding workout to seem far more sustainable than simply focusing on the sounds of weight crashing together for a full hour. With TV, I particularly enjoy that time between sets is occupied, as opposed to focused on the intensity necessary for the remaining bodybuilding workout. I have even occasionally performed a hybrid, alternating between TV and music during one workout, playing songs as I perform a weight training set, while using TV during periods between sets, and this concept has also worked very well in greatly reducing negative mental components that accompany weight training workout sessions.
Even though many bodybuilders have already discovered the power of music to fuel weight training workouts, many do not spend sufficient time diversifying their musical choices, as inevitably, regardless of how much motivation a certain musical selection may offer, after frequent plays, the motivational effect will decline, and those who load their music player with the exact same group of several songs will soon no longer feel inspired. This is why, searching for a wide selection of music is necessary, as cycling through a variety of songs will allow what now may seem unstimulating a chance to refresh itself, and upon returning to your weight training workouts in several weeks, that same song will boost workout intensity once again. The key is to choose enough music to swap between groups of songs over a several month period, as this keeps the choices entertaining, and will enhance the positive distraction in your weight training workouts that will keep you consistent and primed for success.
