What You Should Know About Acute Sinus Infections

When someone has an acute sinus infection, his or her nasal passages become inflamed, therefore, making it difficult for customary drainage of the mucus. Consequently, the person develops a fever, cough, headache and difficulty breathing.

In most cases, the cold is what brings on a sinus infection. However, there are other causes, which include allergies, bacteria, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum and a variety of medical conditions. A physician must first determine the exact cause of the infection before he or she can administer treatment.

However, in most cases of a sinus infection, bacteria or viruses are the main culprits. If the infection lasts for more than 14 days, then your physician will assume that it is a bacterial infection. This is one of many ways to figure out the cause of the infection.

You can tell if you have a sinus infection by looking out for symptoms such as cough, dental pain, bad breath, erythema, fatigue, fever, nasal congestion, nausea or sore throat. If you recognize one or all of these symptoms, drastic action is recommended to prevent the onset of a chronic sinus infection, which is a lot worse and can burden you with horrible complications.

Not getting immediate treatment for your infection could result in it being prolonged for more than eight weeks. Other complications such as acute asthma, aneurysms, meningitis, and vision problems can also arise from a laissez-faire approach to the illness.

Plenty of bed rest and the consumption of liquids such as herbal teas, orange juice, and water can be used to treat a mild sinus infection. However, it would be wise to seek medical attention immediately if you experience a fever that exceeds 100.5 degrees.

Upon going to the doctor, be prepared to answer a few questions about your medical history. In some instances, a physical examination will be given to gauge your overall health. Some doctors may even call for a CT scan to locate the areas of the sinus cavity that are inflamed.

An acute sinus infection is nothing to laugh at; however, it is not as serious as its chronic counterpart is. It can happen to anyone, if you are highly susceptible to colds, then I suggest taking better care of your health. Exercising and taking supplements like vitamin C will help your immune system immensely.
