Business Cards and Repeat Business

I see so many different companies who have all of their attention focused purely on getting new customers. This is the centerpiece of growth, after all, and if you want your company to keep getting larger you need to keep getting those new customers.

Yes, I’m not going to argue the point that you need new customers if you want your business to continue growing, but what you can’t do is forget about your other customers at the same time.

Each time you successfully serve a customer, you aren’t just getting a single sale. What you’re doing is setting up a system of repeated business. Always, and I really mean always, hand people your color business cards after you’ve completely your services with them. I don’t care what the job was; you need to make sure your business card is in their hand. So yes, I'm saying you should invest on business card printing.

I almost exclusively focus on the companies I know did a good job. For any service industry type company this is going to be even more true and important to me. I like to know I’m going to get the best job possible, and to be honest I always dislike having to go to a new company for the first time.

What if they do a bad job or what if they treat me poorly? What if their customer service is lacking or I have some issue and have to struggle with them for weeks to get the matter resolved? I don’t want to have to deal with any of this. That’s why if I know a company has done a good job I’ll go out of my way to use them again.

But I’m not always going to think to ask for a business card. If they aren’t bothering to hand out those color business cards I’m very likely to forget about them, and so months down the line when I need to hire them again, I can’t remember their name. I could search through the phone book for a long time and still never remember exactly who they are. What can I say; I’m bad with names.

The duty rests on your shoulders to make sure you get those business cards into a person’s hands. Always carry your business cards with you at all times no matter what, but especially if you’re going to be doing a job for someone.

If you have an office with business cards on a table, still pick one up and hand it to the person just to make sure they have one. Don’t expect them to think about picking one up themselves. It’s your job to promote your business, and it isn’t your customer’s job to do that for you. Why lose future business simply because you forgot to hand them your business card?
