The Most Recommended Sleep Aids

When people have trouble sleeping for more than just a night or two, they often turn to sleeping pills. These may seem to work at the beginning, but don't provide a true cure for insomnia. Often they simply lead to dependency and addiction. Rather than drugging yourself to sleep at night, the preferred solution to sleeplessness begins with finding the cause. It's possible that your inability to sleep could be cured with changes to your daily lifestyle.

Prescription sleep aids cause your body to do two things. First of all, you begin to physically depend on the pill, believing that you cannot sleep without it. Second, even though you develop a dependency, your body also builds up tolerance of the medicine's effects. This means you begin to rely more and more on something that works less and less. In addition to this, prescription sleeping pills often come with a full range of serious side effects.

To be honest, sleeping pills were never intended for anything other than short-term use. Regular use of sleep aids is a somewhat recent phenomenon. That's why physicians are only now recognizing the dangers of tolerance with dependence. This combination can even be deadly if patients decide to increase dosage on their own. Overdose is a real possibility.

Sleeping pills can often lead to drowsiness during the following day. Of course, that's one of the symptoms of sleeplessness that the pills are designed to relieve. But instead of helping you feel rested, prescription sleep medications often leave you feeling lethargic and groggy. The active ingredients in these pills tend to stay in your body for hours after you wake up. Additional side effects include forgetfulness, urinary retention, blurred vision, dry mouth and throat, and lack of concentration.

Whenever you take sleep medications, you also have to be concerned about interactions with other drugs. Your physician or pharmacist should be able to help you figure out if there is a potential problem. But do your own research as well.

In the end, prescription sleep aids may not be worth the risk. They only provide short-term relief without ever addressing the root cause of your sleeplessness. If you would make a few changes to your lifestyle instead, like exercising, avoiding caffeine and starting a structured sleep program, you could greatly improve your sleep quality without the side effects of strong medicine. Insomnia can be beaten naturally and it can be beaten for good.
