Why The Easy Answer To Sleep Problems Is Not The Best Answer

If you have sleep problems—and many people in this world do—then it is understandable that you want a fast solution. But sleeping pills are not the best answer, even if they are the most popular. By choosing sleeping pills as the remedy for your sleep problems, you may be asking for a whole new set of difficulties and side effects.

Here are some the most common complaints connected to sleeping pills: dizziness, hallucinations, inability to concentrate, confusion and aggression. Other possible side effects include vivid nightmares. skin allergies, cramps and reduced physical coordination.

Once you start taking prescription sleep aids, your body quickly begins to rely on their effect. But ironically, your body also begins to develop a tolerance to them. Like many drugs, a higher dosage is required to achieve the same results. Unfortunately, this practice can be dangerous and can have tragic consequences. And yet, sleeping pills continue to be a popular choice for dealing with sleep problems.

Here's the problem. After you have suffered with difficulty sleeping, even for a little while, you crave any solution that offers hope. Sleeplessness is a traumatic condition. Those who suffer from insomnia and other sleep problems actually begin to fear the night and the restless agony that it brings. If sleeping pills can deliver them from these hours of near madness, then the prospect of a few side effects is no big deal.

Sleeping pills, with their one-pill-immediate-effect promise, are very attractive to anyone suffering from insomnia. And most people do find that they can sleep—under the influence. But has their problem really been solved?

As you might imagine, this has been studied quite a bit. Several clinical experiments have found that people taking a placebo (a fake substitute) actually slept better and had more daytime energy that people taking a prescription strength sleeping pill. So some of the relief is clearly psychological.

If you choose to use sleep medications to combat your sleep problems, then you should always work closely with your doctor. The pills should be used only as a temporary solution until the causes of your insomnia can be discovered. Maybe your difficulty sleeping is only temporary and your body just needs to be nudged back into rhythm. Some patients have found that sleeping pills can accomplish this. But again, it's a dangerous game, and a step not to be taken lightly.

Your body is smart and quick. If it can expect you to take a sleeping pill, then it will begin to expect it. Psychologically, you will quickly become dependent on the medicine. You will convince yourself that sleep cannot occur without it.

It is normal and natural for you to be envious of those without sleep problems. But you actually have no idea what they have suffered in the past, or may be dealing with silently. If you can find someone who has successfully overcome difficulty sleeping, you may be able to learn a great deal from them.
