| How to Rethink Your Business |
One of the most important parts of building a small business is building your brand. Your brand is the overall identity of your business. It includes the way people perceive your company, and the things you do to influence that perception. It encompasses your logo, your letterhead, you brochure; basically, all of your marketing efforts.
To ensure that you are effectively building your brand, you sometimes need to step back and evaluate your position. Here is a plan to help you “rethink” your business strategy.
What is Your Business?
To start with, go back to the basics. What does your business do? What need does it fill? These are the things that will ultimately define your brand.
Who Does Your Business Serve?
When you know what need your business fills, you will then be able to determine who your business serves. It serves the people who have that particular need. These are your target customers, and the one who will be affected by your branding efforts.
Who Are Your Competitors?
Even knowing what need your business fills, and what customers it serves, you are still only part of the way there. You also need to know who your competitors are. How do they approach their target market? How to they build their brand?
What Makes Your Company Better Than Your Competitors?
There should be something about your business that makes it stand out; something that makes it better than any other company. You need to figure out what that thing is, if you haven’t already.
After you have thought about all of these questions, and thoroughly found your answers to them, you can devise your plan for building your brand. Compile all of this information to develop your strategy.
The most important aspect of this is the thing that sets your company apart. This is going to be the foundation of your marketing efforts. Your brand is going to be built around that one thing (or several things, if you are lucky). Make this thing the message that you constantly try to convey to your target customers. For your next brochure printing project, use this as your key message. For your next business cards, focus on this aspect. It is extremely important.
You should go through this rethinking routine often. Once a year is a good starting point. Also, whenever you are concerned that your marketing efforts are not working up to your expectations, go through this process. If you start to see your competitors’ brand building efforts moving ahead of your own, go through this process. This is not a one time thing. You need to do this regularly to ensure that your marketing strategy is always effectively building your brand.
